　　为了使读者在阅读具体的篇目前首先领略西方修辞学的主要历史和概貌特征，我们提供了Bizzell&Herzberg为《修辞学传统》所作的精要而全面的“总导言”。为了帮助了解选文的作者背景并明确所涉及的修辞学核心术语，我们为每位入选的修辞学者提供了简明的编者按。为了方便对相关概念进行系统学习或研究应用，每单元的文选后都附有“拓展阅读”（Further Reading），精心挑选了10种国内外具有代表性的相关著述，并对每一种的研究特色作了扼要说明。选文中还补充了一些中文注解（区别于原注），以明确所选篇章的出处，或疏通难点，或为了增强对相关复杂概念的理解。此外，书末还附有文选中所涉及的核心术语（兼译名）索引，以方便进行快速查阅。本文选适合作为英语专业本科高年级或研究生阶段的英语修辞学课程教材或辅助教材。当然，一个学期是不可能学完所有篇目的，编者建议本科生的研习可集中于相对容易把握和应用的伊索克拉底的“时机性”、亚里士多德的“人格诉求”以及“情感诉求”和“理性诉求”、西塞罗的“宣讲”、伊拉斯谟的“丰裕”、韦弗的“论题”、佩雷尔曼的“受众”、伯克的“认同”与福斯的“修辞批评”。而其他难度较大的术语选文可作为研究生阶段的修学材料。
