Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (I859-I93O) was a Scottish author most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major: 'innovation in the field of crime fiction, and for the adventures of Professor Challenger. He was a prolific writer whose other works include science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction.
Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world.

The campaign brought honours and promotion to many, but for me it had nothing but misfortune disaster. 1 was removed from my brigade and attached to the Berkshires, with whom the fatal battle of Maiwand.
